Global Scenario of Prophetic Medicine

The subject of the Prophet’s medicine is vast and comprehensive, and it can only be comprehended by one who believes in the power of divine revelation. The Prophet’s original mission was not solely to contribute to medicine, pharmacy or health science. However, although the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) is not directly linked with the medicine he prescribed, humankind, as the main focal point of the revelation, cannot be ignored in the ultimate guidance, because man needs to remain well, free from sickness to fulfill his mission on earth.

This is why although the Prophet’s arrival was not as a doctor or pharmacist he was inspired to make nearly 1000 statements on health & wellness, sickness & cure and diseases & treatment. And all his statements are found to be in full compliance with the principles of modern medical science. In fact where modern medicine failed Prophetic medicine proved very useful, because the Prophet (ﷺ) was indeed a physician of the body and the soul.

The essence of Qur’anic and the Prophet’s medicines can never be compared with the essence of medicines prescribed by an ordinary physician. There is some hidden wisdom, as well as facts and secrets that can only be perceived by those who have sharp intellects, inquisitive minds, abundant knowledge and pure intelligence. They are the people who contemplate the wonders of creation in the heavens and the earth and glorify Allah at all times. The Qur’an says:

… Say: It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure……(Ha Mim Sajdah 41: 44)

 Currently it is observed that out of the existing several medical systems of treatment none can claim absolute monopoly to cure. Every system of treatment has its own limitations. There are certain diseases for which oral antibiotics and other internal medicines are found most effective, whereas for some diseases internal medicines such as alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, antibiotics etc. are not at all effective. They need physiotherapy for a considerable period of time. In fact when it comes to treating broken bones and injured body parts, mainstream Western medicine is the only answer. But when the modern medicine is used to treat illness and disease – fixing or repairing the parts where the symptoms of underlying illnesses manifest themselves, modern medicine fails.

In view of these it is noticed that beside modern allopathic medical system, many educated people are seen resorting to homeopathic, unani (herbal), ayurvedic and alternative medicines for cure. In fact people are free to choose the system of treatment they find easily accessible and effective. It is, therefore very necessary that for the benefit of ordinary people Prophetic medicine should be allowed to be practiced along with other systems of treatment such as allopathic, homeopathic, Ayurvedic, Unani and herbal medicines as an integrated medical system.

For transplant of vital body organs and some acute ailments there is no alternative to modern surgical operations. On the other hand for some behavioural disorders physical medicines do not bring permanent cure. In such cases spiritual medicines are found to have profound healing effects. Indeed Prophetic medicine is suitable for the good body, like the Qur’an is good to the soul and heart that is alive. Allah says:

“O humankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Yunus 10: 57)

Currently it is observed that the global community has been often experiencing grief and anxiety, depression and anguish, unrest and dissatisfaction, uncertainty and worry, misfortune and calamity, greed and lack of mental peace to such an extent that even sleeping pills cannot give them satisfaction, peace of mind and happiness. Therefore, it is visualized that if generations of humankind wish to live on this beautiful planet happily and peacefully, free from ill health, afflictions and pollution, they have no other alternative but to adopt the Prophet’s medicine in its entirety. Like light, wind and oxygen bestowed by Allah are for all living beings; similarly the Prophetic traditions on healing are for the entire mankind. They are not only for the Muslims, but for the people of all nations and in all ages, irrespective of their religious beliefs, color, language and creed. It is therefore hoped that the medicine of the Prophet (ﷺ) shall be the medicine of the future.

      Pure honey  

The Qur’an says:

“And your Lord inspired to the bees………… There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colours, in which there is healing for men…………..”   (An-Nahl 16: 68-69)

Allah SWT says in honey therein healing for man. Today we know through research that honey is an immune system stimulant. It cures many diseases including AIDS and cancer. The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“You have two medicines: Honey and the Qur’an.” (A sound hadith recorded by Ibn Mâjah)

Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“If someone licks honey in the morning and evening for three days a month, he will not meet any incurable disease.” (A weak hadith recorded by Ibn Mâjah)

These two Ahadeeth teach us that there is material cure for the physical ailments and also the divine cures, that is, the medicine of the body and medicine of the soul, the earthly medicine and the heavenly cure. Quran is a cure for whatever the heart conceals. If it is not acknowledged and accepted with faith, it will not provide a cure for the heart. In fact, the Quran will only add more disease to the hearts of the hypocrites.

Honey is ‘manufactured’ in one of the world’s most efficient factories, the beehive. In this factory, there is no worker who is a human, and there is no need for machinery and equipment to manufacture honey. Honeybees do all the work. Honey is a splendid gift of nature, which the most gracious  God (Allah SWT) bestowed on humankind. He inspired the honeybees to make this precious natural product for the benefit of man. From the numerous uses of honey as food and medicine, it is proved that the Prophet’s statements made 1,450 years ago are true and in perfect agreement with the results of scientific research of the present time.

Honey is the best Prophetic medicine for the treatment of diarrhea, AIDS and many other diseases. It is an immune system stimulant. It is more effective than antibiotic gentamycin. It is bactericidal. It is antibacterial.  There is an important hadith recorded in Sahih Al-Bukhari and narrated by Abu  Saeed Khudri (ra) concerning treatment of diarrhoea. The companion drank honey in sufficient dosage and got completely cured.

In view of the above, if Prophetic Medical System is established and legally practiced along with other existing systems of treatment initially in countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia and Pakistan, where the citizens are predominantly Muslims, ordinary people could obtain the benefit of healing from ailments not easily curable or at all curable through the existing systems of treatment, which often are very expensive. The spiritual aspects of Prophetic medicine, which mainly consist of prayer and supplication, and recitation from the Holy Qur’an, play a significant role in healing. This has been proved by some clinical researches carried out in Harvard School of Medicine, USA. Ali (RA) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“The best medicine is the Qur’an.” (Recorded by at-Tirmidhi)

The noble Qur’an is not a typical book of medicine, health science or pharmacy, but it provides effective guidance, which, if followed, ensures good health and absolute healing. It contains the prescription for all types of ailments, be it physical or spiritual. It provides the prescription not only to treat an individual but also a society, a nation and the humankind. It contains the remedy for people who possess a wicked character and for those who are socially misled. A large number of people who have come in contact with the Qur’an and received guidance from it stayed away from all kinds of pollution, lust and material influence. They also remained free from diseases and sickness and were not usually dependent on doctors and physicians. There are numerous examples of such people in the pages of history.

Once Abu Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddeeq (ra) was sick and the people around him asked, “Shall we call a doctor for you?” He replied, “He has already seen me.” Then they asked, “What did he say to you?” He replied: “…Indeed, your Lord does whatever He intends.” (Hud 11: 107)
